Jack Ma’s Africa tour reminds us how technologically behind Nigeria still is

The African continent welcomed Jack Ma, CEO of Alibaba, to its shores last week. On this trip, Asia’s richest man made cursory stops in two African countries, preaching the gospel of entrepreneurship to thousands of entrepreneurs. While his visit reaffirmed the growing influence of the African continent, (un)fortunately, it is Kenya and Rwanda that would be leading this narrative — not Nigeria Last year, Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg visited Africa in what many perceived as the beginning of greater things for the continent. Of course, Nigeria would be the epicenter, considering that Kenya was a bit sidelined in the media narrative. Many article headlines such as; “Facebook’s Zuckerberg Visits Nigeria on First Sub Sahara Africa trip” also amplified the Nigerian narrative. Although a few publishing houses chose their words carefully, with liberal headlines which referenced the “African continent”, it appears they tried not to overplay the significance of Nigeria alone in the grand...

Revealed: Liverpool's 22-man squad for Berlin friendly

Liverpool have named a 22-man squad for this afternoon's pre-season friendly with Hertha BSC in Germany. As revealed by Liverpoolfc.com on Friday night, Sadio Mane, Emre Can and Andrew Robertson have been included in the travelling party to Germany’s capital city. Eight players will remain at the Reds’ training base in Rottach-Egern, Bavaria. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Woodburn, Marko Grujic and Danny Ings are all fit, but will undertake sessions with the backroom team. Loris Karius (hip), James Milner (thigh), Nathaniel Clyne (hamstring) and Danny Ward (knee) are ruled out due to injury. Man City to sign a central defender, adding to 200m summer haul

Manager Pep Guardiola has said Manchester City "will try" to sign a central defender this summer. Eliaquim Mangala is expected to depart, which would leave City with Vincent Kompany, John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi as established centre-backs. "We don't have too much more to spend but we are going to see," said Guardiola, speaking before Saturday's friendly with Tottenham (23:00 BST). City have spent about £200m this summer - £120m of that on three full-backs. In the past week, Kyle Walker moved from Spurs for £45m, Danilo joined from Real Madrid for £26.5m and Benjamin Mendy was recruited from Monaco for £52m. They join Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva (£43m) and Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson Moraes (£35m) in arriving at City this summer. Expect more defection from PDP – Analysts

Some political analysts have predicted more defection by PDP members as a result of Friday’s court judgment that faulted the process of dissolving the Sen. Ali-Modu Sheriff-led PDP national chairmanship. The public affairs analysts said in Lagos on Monday that the judgment could deepen the crisis in PDP. The Court of Appeal Court sitting in Port Harcourt ruled that the PDP caretaker committee headed by Sen. Ahmed Makarfi was illegal and could not act on behalf of the party. The Sheriff-led national chairmanship was dissolved by some leaders of the party at a national convention held in Port Harcourt in May 2016. Sheriff claimed that the convention had been called off, and sustained himself as the national chairman. This led to factionalisation of the party, with some members loyal to Sheriff and others to Makarfi. Edo election: PDP are bad losers, says Ojezua

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Edo chapter, Mr. Anselm Ojezua, has described the rejection of the state governorship election results by the Peoples Democratic Party as an act of a bad loser. Ojezua said in Benin on Thursday that the entire process of the election had been nothing but peaceful. He said, “This is just a case of a bad loser. It is a pity that the PDP expects to win in a state which it had run down. “Though the announcement of the results is still ongoing, I commend INEC , thus far. “The process was very peaceful. INEC was efficient in delivery of materials to ensure that they got to locations on time.” The chairman advised the PDP to channel its grievances to the appropriate quarters. The PDP had, through its Chairman, rejected the results of the election, describing it as “fabricated and pre-determined”.

Makarfi,PDP chairman, involved in auto crash

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Ahmed Makarfi, on Friday escaped death after a vehicle he was travelling in was involved in multiple collision along Abuja-Kaduna Highway. PDP spokesman,  Dayo Adeyeye in a statement, said that Mr. Makarfi “and all other passengers in his vehicle came out unhurt.” He said, “This is to allay the fears of our Party members, teeming supporters and well wishers who heard of the accident and have been making frantic calls; as well as those who may stumble on half-baked information.”
